I am a clinical and community psychologist, engaged in both research and practice to promote public health and well-being. My expertise is in services for trauma-exposed populations, including the provision of early preventive interventions as well as psychological treatments to address a range of common problems experienced by trauma survivors (e.g., posttraumatic stress, depression, alcohol misuse, and suicidality).
I work with individuals, providers, agencies, and healthcare systems to implement public behavioral health interventions. I have expertise in training providers across general medical as well as specialty behavioral health settings in patient-centered care, Motivational Interviewing, and cognitive behavioral approaches. I received my doctorate in Community Psychology from Georgia State University in 2006. As a community psychologist, I emphasize collaborative research methods that engender participation and engagement in the research process. I have conducted a wide range of evaluations in public, private, and philanthropic settings, helping to improve the development of interventions in mental health, child welfare, and juvenile justice settings. I have focused on research methods for the evaluation of interventions operating at the system and community level. Examples include the evaluation of a federally funded Systems of Care initiative, the evaluation of a statewide network of community collaboratives, and the evaluation and benefit-cost analysis of marijuana legalization in Washington State.
I grew up in an Air Force family, and we moved a lot, mostly to different stations in Texas. Eventually we wound up in Spokane, where I graduated from high school. I received my undergraduate degree from The Evergreen State College, then attended graduate school in Atlanta, where I remained for about 12 years, until Doyanne and I managed to move ourselves back out to Washington in 2011. We've lived in Tacoma since 2014, and we love it! Learn more about my professional background here. |
